Born in Kiel in 1969, from a German mother and Italian father, Elena Siniscalchi grew up in Italy.
She studied German, French, English and American literature at the “Philsophische Fakultät” in Kiel (Germany) and finally graduated in Milan.
Later on she studied with Giuliana Traverso, a well known Italian portrait photographer.
For many years she has had a portrait atelier in Milan and has worked for the theatre as well.
Portraits, focused on facial expressions and gestures are the central theme of her work. In fact, invisible communication is the thread that binds most of her projects, dealing with hand movements and facial expressions.
A few years ago she started with Nonverbal Communication Projects (NONVERBAL PHOTOGRAPHY). The first exhibition on this theme was Voci dal silenzio Sentire con lo sguardo: i sordi e la lingua dei segni
(Silent voices. hearing through eyes: deaf people and sign language) which deals with deaf children speaking Italian Sign Language.

NONVERBAL PHOTOGRAPHY* investigates nonverbal communication; this is the common thread that joins my photography projects on invisible communication, visual language, mimicry and gestures.
The aim is to shed light on what connects one human being to another, beyond all barriers and create an opportunity to reflect on the the origin and meaning of communication at large, taking all types of communication into account. The field of investigation revolves around the concepts of identification and the distinction from others.
